Constructing Memories

Maylands Meccano Club brings like minded people together to enjoy the creativity and challenges of meccano.

Meccano is a model construction system created in 1901 by Frank Hornby. Meccano’s heyday was during the 1930s to 1960s but it is still around today. It has been modernised a number of times to appeal to successive generations.

Maylands Meccano Club has parts and model kits from all of the different eras. You can learn to build models using the club’s huge range of meccano parts.

Steve from Lay2 Real Estate caught up with club members Ross, Mick, Clem and Dave to find out more.

The Maylands Meccano Club has been going since 1936. They still have their original certificate of membership to the Meccano Guild signed by Frank Hornby. It’s the only Meccano Club in WA – one of only three in Australia and the only club with a dedicated workshop.

The Club was founded by Viv Malmgreen. Viv’s long and interesting life included serving in World War II, a British Empire Medal and being named Bayswater Citizen of the Year in 1999. Viv continued his support and involvement with Maylands Meccano Club until he passed away.

The Club originally operated from a shed on Viv’s parents’ property. By the 1970s, Viv had inherited the property, constructed a new building for the Club and officially transferred ownership of it to the Maylands Meccano Club to ensure its future.

The Maylands Meccano Club is located at 16 Kennedy Street Maylands. It is open from 1pm to 4pm every Saturday throughout the year except January.

From older members reliving their childhood memories, to young and old alike discovering meccano for the first time, everybody is welcome.

First time visitors are welcome free of charge. Membership fee’s are inexpensive and flexible with casual visits at just $2 per visit or annual memberships just $35 for kids and $50 for adults.

If you have any old meccano parts, magazines or memorabilia in a dusty box somewhere, think about donating them to the Maylands Meccano Club where they will be given a new life.
