Shirley Winstanley is a local artist living in Maylands. Her passion for ‘playing with paint’ comes from the love of painting directly from life; faces, figures, still life and landscapes.
Her interest in art started many years ago, with the smell of oil paint and turps in her father’s workshop, but she didn’t start painting ‘seriously’ until around 1996.
Shirley creates impressionist art pieces that can transform a house through colour and selected images.
She is predominantly a self-taught artist who works hard to put in the hours of ‘brush mileage’ to increase her skills. She paints 3 times a week for between two and three hours a day.
Steve from Lay2 Real Estate owns many of Shirley’s paintings. He caught up with Shirley for a chat at her studio.
Shirley’s travels to Europe further enhanced her skills. Her talents resulted in her being the artist in residence in Bivongi, Italy, with support from the City of Bayswater. She also travels within Australia, painting ‘plein air’ and sleeping in her Townace van on the side of the road!
She is a regular participant in group exhibitions and has hosted three successful solo exhibitions. Her paintings are held in public and private collections both here and overseas.
Shirley conducts life drawing, beginner acrylic/drawing workshops and classes. She can also be commissioned if you’d like her to paint a particular place, person or object.
